Rituals to balance the sacral chakra (svadhisthana)

Sacral Chakra

It’s time to meet your sacral chakra…

The sacral chakra, also known as svadhisthana, is located below the belly button above the pubic bone. It’s an intense area of movement, creativity and pleasure. When balanced it promotes connection with the feminine, sensual and sexual enjoyment and healthy relationships. Open your mind and tap into your creativity.

Energetically, this chakra steers us away from repressing emotions and guides our self expression. When your sacral chakra is open you’ll feel emotions more intensely. This may be intense joy, but it also may be other emotions you’re less excited to feel intensely. This emotional expression is healthy, the key is to not dismiss unwanted feelings but feel them, process and let them flow. Keep reading for some tips on balancing intense emotions, no doubt you already have a few faves of your own.

It’s win-win. Not only will we feel better, but we’ll actually get better at feeling!

Connect with feminine energy

Energetically, this chakra has a strong connection to feminine energy. It is linked to water and the moon, both these relate to feminine or yin energy.

The sacral chakra aligns with cycles and fluid in the body, correlating with the menstrual cycle and birth. It’s the place of ultimate creation and of birthing new ideas from a primal space.

How will I know if my sacral chakra is out of balance?

When in balance we are highly creative. We embody our physical selves and our sensuality and sexuality feels delightfully playful. We feel and move fluidly, enjoying the feel of dancing, yoga and other movement practices. While we may feel emotions intensely, we’re able to experience their full range, working through them, feeling the free flow of life. Yes please to all of that!

If our sacral chakra is over active, we might feel:

  • Controlled by our emotions, stuck and stagnant.

  • Overwhelmed. So many feels, too many feels!

  • Like we are sliding into addictive behaviours.

  • Like we have unhealthy attachments to people.

If our sacral chakra is under active, we might feel:

  • Insensitive and cold-hearted.

  • Detached from emotions, ours and those around us.

  • Like we can’t express our feelings.

  • Like we are creatively stuck, blocked, unimaginative. Uuurgh!

  • Like sexuality is wrong.

Hurry up and get to the good stuff! What can I do to balance my sacral chakra?

The answer: there are so many wonderful things that bring balance to this chakra - and bring intense joy!

  • Try our Feel & Flow Flower Elixir Pleasure State. This fusion of flower essences & reiki energy has been created to balance sacral chakra energy.

  • Get wet! Working with the flow of water such a wonderful way to open the sacral chakra. You might:

    • Go swimming, soak in a bath or enjoy a shower.

    • Make sure you’re hydrated, keep up the water and get the herbal teas steeping.

    • Visualise water flowing during meditation. Or, even better, can you spend time at the beach or near a waterfall, creek or river?

  • Channel intense emotions into movement or another form of expression. Don’t suppress them, keep them flowing! You might paint or create in another way, exercise or see below for a couple more ideas…

  • Dance, just dance. Movement activates sacral energy. Pump some tunes and get grooving, there’s no right or wrong way! Get in touch with that primal energy.

  • Yoga. I absolutely love the way yoga teacher Allie Van Fossen aligns her practice to the chakra system. Check out her Sacral Chakra Cleanse flow.

  • Sync up with the moon. Working with lunar energy is a beautiful practice. The moon is linked to water, flow, the feminine and emotions. You can try journaling with the phases of the moon.

  • Work with crystals. Wear them, carry them, meditate with them. Basically make friends with crystals! Try fiery & sunny stones, but also consider stones associated with water:

    • Carnelian for vitaliy

    • Moonstone for feminine energy

    • Opal for creativity

    • Red Garnet for passion

  • Embrace essential oils. Warming scents are your go-tos for balancing sacral chakra energy. Think cinnamon, ginger and one of my faves, sandalwood. Or try feminine scents like rose or ylang ylang.

  • Mantras can also be a wonderful way to focus balance the sacral chakra. You might like to try: “I honour my feelings.” “I am in flow with life.” “I express myself with my body.”
